Harry Patch RIP – it’s over to us now

Radiohead have released a beautiful song to commemorate/mourn the death of Harry Patch. Harry Patch was the last surviving soldier to have experienced the trenches of the First World War, his passing has been well documented throughout world media, and today was his funeral. With his death comes a physical break with these events, and although the First and Second World War left us with many and varied sources to draw our understanding from, there is something very real about that final human disconnect. I guess it’s over to historians now to ensure that the messages from that time continue to get through to a new generation.

The Radiohead song Harry Patch (In Memory Of) can be downloaded from their site for a fee of £1. The proceeds go the the British Legion. Download here.

“i am the only one that got through
the others died where ever they fell
it was an ambush
they came up from all sides
give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves
i’ve seen devils coming up from the ground
i’ve seen hell upon this earth
the next will be chemical but they will never learn”
